What Is USDT? A Plain-English Guide to Tether

USDT is a stablecoin designed to hold a value of one US dollar. Here is how it keeps that peg, why traders use it and what to watch out for before you hold any.

USDT, usually called Tether, is a stablecoin: a digital token designed to stay worth one US dollar. It is the most widely used token in crypto by trading volume, and on most platforms — including this one — it is the currency everything is denominated in.

That matters because the alternative is worse. If a platform quoted your balance in Bitcoin, a 10% weekly return could still leave you with less purchasing power than you started with, because the unit itself moved. Denominating in a dollar-pegged token separates the return from the currency risk.

How the peg actually works

USDT is not the dollar and it is not backed by one in the way a bank deposit is. It is issued by a company, Tether Limited, which claims to hold reserves — cash, short-term treasuries and other assets — against the tokens in circulation. The peg holds for two reasons:

  • Redemption. Large, verified customers can redeem USDT with the issuer for dollars at parity. If USDT trades below a dollar, redeeming at parity is profitable, which creates buying pressure that pushes the price back up.
  • Arbitrage. Traders exploit any gap between venues continuously, which keeps the price consistent even where redemption is not directly available.

In practice this works well. USDT trades within a fraction of a cent of a dollar the vast majority of the time. But the mechanism depends on the issuer, and that is a real dependency rather than a theoretical one.

Where its limits are

Being honest about this is more useful than reassurance. USDT carries risks the dollar in your bank account does not:

  • Issuer risk. The peg rests on Tether Limited's reserves being sufficient and liquid. Reserve attestations have improved considerably over the years but they are not the same as a full audit of a regulated bank.
  • No deposit protection. There is no FSCS equivalent. If the issuer failed, there is no scheme that makes holders whole.
  • Freezing. Tether can and does freeze specific addresses, usually at the request of law enforcement. Tokens at a frozen address cannot be moved.
  • Brief depegs happen. During market stress USDT has traded a cent or two below a dollar on some venues. It has recovered each time, but someone forced to sell at that moment took the loss.

USDT is not one thing

This is the part that costs people real money. The same USDT exists as separate tokens on several different blockchains — TRON, Ethereum, BNB Smart Chain, Solana and others. They are all redeemable for a dollar, but they are not interchangeable in transit. Sending USDT on Ethereum to an address that only exists on TRON does not move your money somewhere inconvenient; it usually destroys it.

Before you send anything, read the network guide. It takes five minutes and it is the single most expensive mistake to avoid in crypto.

Using USDT here

On Bullish UK, USDT is both what you fund a plan with and what your earnings are credited in. When a deposit address is issued to you it is tied to one specific network, and that network is displayed next to the address. The amount you send must match the plan amount, and you submit the transaction hash afterwards so the transfer can be confirmed against the chain.

Earnings are credited as USDT to your available balance daily, and withdrawals are paid in USDT to an address you supply. You can see the plan figures on the plans page.

The short version

  • USDT is a token designed to be worth one dollar, and it mostly is.
  • Its stability comes from redemption and arbitrage, not from a government guarantee.
  • It carries issuer risk and has no deposit protection. Treat it as a trading instrument, not savings.
  • It exists separately on multiple blockchains. The network you send on is not a detail.
